Care approaches should be tailored for individuals who have undergone reconstructive surgeries, such as hip or knee replacements, spinal stabilization for the neck and lower back, or corrective scoliosis surgeries involving rods, screws, and tethers. Post-surgical chiropractic adjustments for follow-up and ongoing care must be carefully customized to meet each patient’s unique needs, ensuring safe and effective support in their recovery and wellness journey.
Integrating Dr. McDougle’s Specialized Chiropractic Care into the Pre- and Post-Surgical Process
With decades of experience in chiropractic care and a background in sports and injury prevention, Dr. Todd McDougle brings a unique, highly specialized approach to the pre- and post-surgical journey. While standardized hospital protocols are essential for surgical intervention, they often overlook the benefits of chiropractic care. Our office aims to fill this gap by educating patients about how chiropractic can enhance surgical outcomes, whether through conservative care alone or by preparing the body for surgery.
Dr. McDougle’s expertise is invaluable for patients dealing with a wide range of complex conditions that may require conservative care before surgery. From headaches, TMJ issues, scoliosis, and stenosis to spondylolisthesis and disc issues, Dr. McDougle provides a thorough chiropractic assessment informed by the 27-point PCCRP guidelines developed by radiology experts at the International Chiropractors Association. By combining his specialized training with patient-provided history, MRIs, x-rays, and doctor reports, Dr. McDougle constructs a complete, personalized health profile for every patient.
This skillful approach allows Dr. McDougle to create a data-informed, strategic plan tailored to each patient. By leveraging his experience in treating complex cases, he offers patients the potential to avoid surgery altogether through effective chiropractic adjustments that address root causes. For those who eventually require surgery, his method of improving alignment and movement patterns prepares the body for better post-surgical outcomes, similar to how athletes strengthen surrounding muscle groups before major joint surgeries.
Dr. McDougle’s approach is driven by a simple goal: to optimize patient outcomes by preparing the body to heal more effectively. As a pre-surgical chiropractic practitioner, his skill set is focused on improving resilience, enhancing recovery, and supporting each patient in achieving their best possible health outcomes.
Following surgical procedures there will be a period of time for healing of the areas that were compromised then altered by the surgeon. Full-spine AI procedures may require a year to stabilize before treatment. Other areas may only take 6 to 12 weeks following surgery before having a Chiropractic adjustment. Be assured that the Chiropractic Services at IN Chiropractic & Wellness / Indiana Scoliosis Specialist are taylored to fit the needs required for specialized adjustment procedures for those that have had surgery. Dr. McDougle: A Story of Resilience and Determination
In 1988, Dr. Todd McDougle suffered a life-altering injury in an industrial accident that nearly cost him his arm and put an end to his weight-training and bodybuilding goals. Following multiple complex reconstructive surgeries, Dr. McDougle lost nearly half of his arm and both latissimus dorsi muscles, undergoing extensive skin grafts from his thighs and hips. Today, a plate holds his right humerus together. Despite being told he’d never return to bodybuilding, he defied the odds. In 1993, he made a triumphant return to competition—with a 21-inch non-injured arm, built naturally, without steroids.
Dr. McDougle’s journey has given him unmatched insight into overcoming physical setbacks, allowing him to connect with patients facing pre- and post-surgical challenges on a deeper level. His own experiences with injury and recovery have inspired a “no excuses” approach to care, combining empathy with a commitment to helping patients rebuild strength and resilience. These challenges have driven him to innovate in chiropractic care, particularly in methods that support both surgical recovery and the unique demands of high-performance athletes.
Having a doctor with firsthand experience overcoming such challenges is rare. Dr. McDougle’s story is one of resilience and dedication, and his approach reflects the belief that, with the right support, physical limitations can be overcome.
